When I first started blogging, I never thought about branding which was a mistake. I had to start my blog all over again once I did.
Ok, so what does branding mean anyway? It doesn’t mean using an iron on cattle. Hint, it’s something that’s a great practice to do when you first start blogging.
Ok without further ado …

What Is Branding?
Branding is the act of creating a brand or the “atmosphere” for your blog. It is how you want people to feel when they come to your blog.
For example, when you think about Pepsi, it is a brand of soda. You can recognize it by its logo, the colours red, white and blue. You know it by its quality of taste and even by their slogan.
You can create a brand for your blog through creating: a catchy blog name, have a great logo, maintaining a certain colour scheme, using the same fonts on your blog, having helpful quality articles with nice pictures, maintaining a consistent blogging schedule, keep to your values (especially on social media), have a slogan/tagline or a mission statement, plus other factors.
Now I know it is easier said then done, but it will help you create a positive atmosphere for your blog. People will be drawn to your blog and they might not even know why. It’s the impression your blog gives off.
Here’s How To Build A Brand Online
1. Research Your Target Audience
I have a whole article about finding your target audience. It is very important to know who you are writing your blog for and what they like to read.
2. Create A Catchy Blog Name or Domain Name
Spend some time thinking about your blog name or domain name. My domain name is HowToStartaBlogOnline.com .
I wanted to keep it simple so that is why I chose that name. It’s a little bit long, but everything else was taken. It’s best to keep it short if you can.
However, you can be creative and add your own unique touch to your blog name. I will be creating an article soon about choosing a domain name for your blog.
To start a blog online you need a domain name, web hosting and a free blogging platform (ie. a free blogging software like WordPress.org or other ones). It might seem complicated, but it’s not. It just takes some time.
You can start a free blog or own a blog you paid for. That depends on you. I would rather own my blog.
I paid for my domain name and web hosting. The blogging platform/software was free from WordPress.org. Do some research on this topic before you start a blog.
3. Figure Out What Colours You Want To Use On Your Blog
Certain colours give off a certain mood. There is a theory behind colours and how they make you feel.
Once you have picked your colours try and stick to those colours throughout your blog. It’s easier said then done, but it sure looks nice!
4. Have A Great Logo
Once you have confirmed that you own a certain domain name, then you can go ahead and make a great logo for it with your colour scheme that you chose.
For me I first bought the domain name HowToStartaBlogOnline.com and then I was able to create a logo from these words.
So many domain names are already taken, so it is a good idea to see if it is available before you start creating a logo.
Once the domain name you like is available grab it immediately. I once liked a domain name and it was available at the time, but I decided to get it the next day.
Unfortunately, just by waiting a day someone else got it before me. As the old saying goes, “The early bird gets the worm.” LOL!
5. Try to Stick to The Same Fonts
If you can, try and stick to the same fonts throughout your blog. It just looks nicer.
6. Create a Branding Board for Your Blog
In this picture I’ve given an example of a simple branding board. It just helps you visualize better.
I always keep my brand colours on a digital Notepad, so that I can access them quickly when I’m creating graphics for my blog posts.
If you don’t know where to start with your colour scheme you can go to Pinterest to get some inspiration. Just type in “branding kit” and you can see what I mean. However, don’t copy it. It’s just to give you some ideas.
If you want to you can buy a branding kit from websites like Creative Market and Etsy. Just type in the words “branding kit” and you can purchase a premade colour scheme that someone has made. Plus, it usually comes with extra goodies not just the colours.
7. Create Good Quality Articles with Nice Pictures
You want to come across like you know what you are doing, so creating helpful articles creates a nice brand name for you.
Producing good quality articles makes your reader happy. They don’t leave your blog thinking it was a waste of time.
Also, using nice pictures in your blog helps as well. When I wrote this article, I was using Canva to help me create graphics, IvoryMix for paid feminine graphics and free images from places like Pixabay, Pexels and Unsplash.
8. Maintain a Regular Blog Posting Schedule
Wow, I have a hard time with this one! This is not the only blog I own so it can be hard to post here regularly, but it’s the right thing to do for your blog.
When you post regularly it builds up your blog traffic. People can rely on you to post a new article each week. This is what keeps them coming back.
9. Keep To Your Values
This is especially important on social media and on your blog. You don’t want to go crazy on social media and then have a different image on your blog.
Basically, your online actions become your brand. It can be hard, but it will be worth it for you.
10. Create a Slogan/Tagline or Mission Statement
You can create a slogan/tagline or mission statement for your blog and try to stick to it. Read it over and remind yourself why you are blogging.
Why is Branding Important?
I’m going to list off a few reasons:
- It creates trust.
- You look consistent.
- Your quality makes you look knowledgeable.
- It’s a good practice to start as soon as you start your blog.
1. It Creates Trust
When people trust you, they will most likely buy something from your blog. You build trust by being honest, giving helpful advice, maintaining your blogging schedule (for me I sometimes find this difficult, but it is good advice) and produce good quality articles.
2. You Look Consistent
Posting blog articles regularly makes you look consistent and reliable. I must admit I have a hard time with this one.
Also consistently using the same colours and fonts throughout your blog, your products, marketing and social media. Overall, it makes your blog more attractive and online you are consistent every where.
3. Your Quality Makes You Look Knowledgeable
Producing helpful articles makes you look knowledgeable. However, they do take up a lot of your time.
I would rather post less and have good quality articles then just push out a bunch of low quality articles.
4. It’s A Good Practice To Start ASAP
Now branding is a very important step to start when you are first creating your blog. You can often spend too much time thinking about the whole process and not doing anything.
So think about it, but don’t let it overwhelm you.
Once I found out about branding, I didn’t like how my blog looked so I had to redo many aspects of my blog all over again.
Start branding as soon as you can. You will be glad that you started early right from the beginning instead of having to redo everything.
I hope this article helped you realize what branding is and why branding is important for your blog.
