What Is A Niche?
So at its most basic definition it means a “topic” or a “subject.”How to find your niche means how to find a subject to base your blog on which will help a certain group of people.
So How Do You Find Your Niche?
If you want to start a blog you need to find a topic to write about. So here are some ideas on how to find your niche.
Find a Topic That You Are Passionate About
You might want to make a list of topics that you like and are passionate about.
The worst thing that you can do is to only choose a topic because it makes a lot of money. Now I know that might sound weird but I’ll explain why.
I did this on one of my blogs and it failed. Why did it fail? To me I found the topic extremely boring and it was painful to write the articles. So my articles were no good and I didn’t make any money.
Eventually I got rid of that blog. I couldn’t keep it up because I lost interest in the subject.
When you think about it you will be writing all the time about that subject, so you have to be interested in it. When you are passionate about it, you will notice that you will start to have more ideas on how to help your reader.
Make Sure That Your Topic Helps Your Reader
If you had a problem and someone helped you out, wouldn’t you be grateful? That’s how you have to build your blog.
Find the problems that your reader has and give them some solutions.
A lot of times you can find a product online that you can sell to your reader that helps even more. This is known as affiliate marketing.
Some people even create their own products to sell to their readers. So not only does it help your reader but it also helps you earn money online as well.
Of course you have to be reasonable about how much of your blog is just selling and not helping at all. It’s always best to first help and then the money will come.
Can You Earn Money From This Topic?
If you want to earn money from your blog, then it is a good idea to check online and see if you can make some money from that subject.
You can check places like Amazon and Clickbank to see if your subject turns up there.
For example, if I’m in the self improvement niche then I know that Amazon sells a lot of self improvement books. You can then become an Amazon affiliate and market some of those books on your blog to earn money. Of course you have to follow their rules on how you market their products.
These are just two places. There are more places online, so do your research first to see if you can earn money based on that niche.
If You Can Try to Narrow Down Your Topic/Focus
Ok, I’m going to give you an example. Suppose I choose a broad topic like cars. Do you know how hard that would be to rank in Google for? You would be competing with major car companies, etc…
So instead you want to dig further down into that topic and choose a specific subject related to cars that you can discuss on your blog.
Now of course, you don’t want to make it so specific that you run out of topics to discuss on your blog. You have to find some middle ground.
Do Niche Research
The last thing that you want to be is caught off guard. You don’t want to waste your time on a blog only to find out later that you can’t make any money on it or you don’t have enough of an audience in that topic.
So how do you find this out?
You can research your niche by going to Google trends and type in your topic in the search bar. Some information will come up about how that topic is trending on Google.
Now if you really think about it, how are people going to find your blog? They usually go to Google and type in a few words about the subject that they want to know more about. Those words that they type in are called “keywords.”
You want to find the right keywords that people are searching for on Google because that will tell you more information about how popular your topic is.
A good way to find this out is by using a free keyword tool like Ubersuggest. Just type in your topic and see what comes up. It will show you how many people are searching for that topic per month.
I found an excellent article that explains keyword research and tells you more keyword research tools to use. You can find it here.
Another important part of niche research is taking a look at your competition. Type your topic into Google and see who comes up first. This will show you your competition.
They are doing something right to get there. Obviously, you wouldn’t copy them but it’s a good example of someone doing their blog right.
An important part of blogging is learning. Learn as much as you can.
I hope this helped you figure out what a niche is and how to find your niche. So do you know what niche you want your blog to be in? Let me know in the comments below.
