The best blogging platform to earn money online is the one that you can fully control and for me that’s WordPress.org. It is a very popular blogging platform.
First you have to know why you are blogging and how you plan to use it. So you should do a lot of research before you start choosing a blogging platform.
My overall purpose of blogging is to earn money, be helpful and to have fun while I blog. I want the freedom of owning my own blog.
There are a lot of blogging platforms that offer free accounts like Wix.com, Blogger.com, Weebly.com and WordPress.com. They usually provide free web hosting and a sub-domain name. Now it doesn’t mean you can’t earn money on a free account, but it has its restrictions.
When you are blogging to earn money there is a lot of work involved that when you first start out you would never know! So keep in mind that you are building up a free account that you don’t own.
As I mentioned before I’m using the blogging platform known as WordPress.org.
Please note that there is a big difference between WordPress.org and WordPress.com. With WordPress.com and other free accounts on other blogging platforms they give you free web hosting and a free sub-domain. With WordPress.org you have to get your own domain name and web hosting.
Now I know what you are thinking “It’s free, I’ve heard enough.” But there is more to it than you know. So read the more detailed list points below to see the differences between having a free account on a blogging platform and a WordPress.org blog.
When you use WordPress.org it is known as a self-hosted blog, because you have to go out and find a web hosting company to host your blog. BlueHost (affiliate link) is a web hosting company that is recommended by WordPress.org and they will give you a free domain name for the first year.
Notice that I said domain name and not sub-domain (you get a free sub-domain with the free accounts on the various blogging platforms).
The WordPress.org blogging platform (or you can look at it as software) is free to install, but you need to pay for web hosting and a domain name.
Web hosting can cost an average around $70 per year (more or less depending on what plan you choose and obviously your currency matters). It can also cost less per year if you go with a longer term. That is just an approximate value. You need to research it as well.
It’s also a good idea to know how much it’s going to cost when the term is up and you want to renew. Note, this is just an average estimate because each web hosting company is different.
A domain name can cost around $12 per year. Like I said, these are just rough estimates because each company is different and other facts weigh in like your currency.
The very fact that you are reading this article means that you must be relatively interested in learning about blogging. So learn all you can about blogging. Successful blogging involves a lot of work, but you can do anything if you want it bad enough.

Here are the reasons why WordPress.org is one of the best blogging platforms to earn money:
1. You want to control the different ways to earn money on your blog
You might not realize it now, but when a bright idea pops up in your mind on how to earn money from your blog you might not be able to do it on a free account. This is because some free accounts on blogging platforms have restrictions on how you can use their free account. Then you start having to pay for upgrades, so you might just end up paying any way you look at it if you want to earn differently.
Whereas the sky is the limit when you own your blog! You are free to decide how you want to earn money with your blog! Wow, there are so many different ways to earn money online, so it is nice to have that freedom of choice.
2. When you use a WordPress.org platform you are the owner of your blog versus a free account you don’t own it
As you probably already know most of the time nothing in life is truly free. So if you want a free blog, then there are going to be limitations to how you can use a free blog. It is more difficult to earn money on free blogs because you don’t own it. However, it is not impossible. Just more limited.
I just wanted to clarify what I mean about owning your own blog. You only own it as long as you keep paying for it. It’s not a one time payment. You have to keep renewing your domain name yearly and also your web hosting (according to how many years you picked to host with them).
The software to run your blog is from WordPress.org and they give it to you free. They own the software you don’t, but you get to use it for free to maintain a blog. Without the software you have no functioning blog. You need that software so that you can post all your articles, etc.. I just wanted to clarify that point.
So this how it works to get a self-hosted blog. You need:
A Domain name + Web Hosting + Software to run your blog (WordPress.org) = A Self-Hosted Blog!
3. Free blogs can be deleted versus a self-hosted blog you own it
Wow, I had to learn the hard way. When I first started blogging I never did the research to find the best blogging platform to earn money. My first reaction was to go with a free account on a blogging platform.
One day to my surprise my blog was deleted! So all that work was gone! So if you are going to try the free accounts on some blogging platforms then make sure you keep all your articles on your laptop or somewhere that you can access them again.
Also, know their rules or your blog can be deleted.
When you own your blog you are controlling it.
4. You own your domain name versus the free accounts you don’t own it and it is usually a sub-domain
Yes you have to pay a small price of around $12 a year (just an estimate it depends on your currency) to own a domain name, but it is worth it because it’s yours.
With the free accounts on some blogging platforms you get a sub-domain.
So that means it will look like this “yourwebsitename.freebloggingsitename.com.” For example, I own Howtostartablogonline.com. If I had a free account at Weebly.com it would look like this “howtostartablogonline.weebly.com.” So from that example everyone can tell that you are using a free account on that blogging platform for your website.
There is nothing wrong with using a free account because they serve different purposes. That is why it very important to know your purpose before you chose a blogging platform.
5. Your time is valuable.
Just think about all the aspects of having a free blog. Imagine spending all that time building up a free blog and you don’t even own it?
When you own your blog you are building up something wonderful for yourself or even your own business.
So if you are looking for the best blogging platform to earn money online, then for me and probably a lot of other WordPress.org users it is WordPress.org. All the best with your blogging journey!
